A View from the Other Side

Quantum Science, Your Brain, and Us

This one covers a lot of topics to do with quantum theory and human consciousness and how they interact, but more importantly, how we interact with you:

The Strange Link Between the Human Mind and Quantum Physics

Quantum mechanics is the best theory we have for describing the world at the nuts-and-bolts level of atoms and subatomic particles. Perhaps the most renowned of its mysteries is the fact that the outcome of a quantum experiment can change depending on whether or not we choose to measure some property of the particles involved.

When this “observer effect” was first noticed by the early pioneers of quantum theory, they were deeply troubled. It seemed to undermine the basic assumption behind all science: that there is an objective world out there, irrespective of us. If the way the world behaves depends on how – or if – we look at it, what can “reality” really mean?

That’s what Schrodinger’s Cat is about. It’s both alive and dead until a person observes its state. Of course, this is a macrocosm example, because the cat itself knows if it’s alive or dead. Cats don’t need people to tell them. But it’s the kind of example people need in order to understand what happens at the quantum microcosm level, which is a whole other situation.

Today some physicists suspect that, whether or not consciousness influences quantum mechanics, it might in fact arise because of it. They think that quantum theory might be needed to fully understand how the brain works.

Here’s where the article starts to get really interesting and isn’t the same old thing about dead/alive cats. It’s turning the theory back on itself, or on its head, or whatever. You get the idea.

The article then talks about the “slit experiment” with light photons and observations and measurements affecting the outcome. But then…

Wheeler even entertained the thought that the presence of living beings, which are capable of “noticing”, has transformed what was previously a multitude of possible quantum pasts into one concrete history. In this sense, Wheeler said, we become participants in the evolution of the Universe since its very beginning. In his words, we live in a “participatory universe.”

Now you’re reading more closely, right? Right. Now we’re getting into where people are affecting how the universe is created and plays out, and not just through conscious (or even unconscious) choices. Simply observing the world around you alters things at the quantum level.

Now imagine if you could control this. Some of us can, as I’ve talked about here before. But I digress. Back to the article:

What if, Penrose asked, there are molecular structures in our brains that are able to alter their state in response to a single quantum event. Could not these structures then adopt a superposition state, just like the particles in the double slit experiment? And might those quantum superpositions then show up in the ways neurons are triggered to communicate via electrical signals?

Maybe, says Penrose, our ability to sustain seemingly incompatible mental states is no quirk of perception, but a real quantum effect.

These structures are called microtubules. They’re real and they exist inside you right now. There’s even a photo of them in the article I’m quoting here. I posted a link to an article here a while back talking about these things, and how they could be what contains consciousness when it’s inside a meat suit. Hello, let me just borrow some of your microtubules for a few minutes so I can type. That kind of thing. But anyway…

Pay close attention to this next part:

Put another way, entangled states are really superposition states involving more than one quantum particle.

Okay. If you’ve read other articles about quantum entanglement, they talk about how two particles can affect each other even though they’re nowhere near each other. I’ve also talked about how parallel universes overlap, which is how I’m able to talk to you here. But this takes it a little farther into explaining how they can overlap, for you people out there who need hard science to explain all this. The superposition state at the quantum level.

But wait, there’s more. It also explains how some of you can not only hear us, but how you can interact with us, and let us front, beyond (or maybe in addition to) the microtubule theory.

The article talks about a particular kind of phosphorus atom and Polsner molecules, then:

In Posner molecules, Fisher argues, phosphorus spins could resist decoherence for a day or so, even in living cells. That means they could influence how the brain works.

Because of entanglement in Posner molecules, two such signals might thus in turn become entangled: a kind of quantum superposition of a “thought”, you might say.

…You might say.

There’s some other cool stuff in there that I’ll let you explore on your own. I’d love to hear what you think. Post a comment.

The Decision to Stay In My Lane

Talked to someone recently and discovered that there are some cosmic-level big things going on out there, even bigger than what I was personally aware of. And as much as I thought I could affect things, well, it’s “above my pay grade” as I told them. Compared to what they and their associates are doing, I’m a tiny speck. I would barely make any difference if or when shit went down.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I don’t want to be involved in giant cosmic battles. Like I said, I wouldn’t do much good anyway. My place is to do what I can for my family, those immediately around me, and to get positive and hopeful stuff to ripple out as far as I can, however I can. That’s it. Well, and to experience what it’s like to be human and all that. Not sure how much of my purpose is that last part, but it’s a good and frustrating side… benefit? Mission? Task? Whatever it is.

As much as I’d like to feel important, it was probably good to have that reminder to stay in my lane, and just do the job I was put here for. I do a decent job of it, so the path ahead for me is obvious and clear. Keep doing what I’ve been doing, for everybody’s sake.

We Gotta Get Out of This Place

“We gotta get out of this place… if it’s the last thing we ever do…”

I’m going stir crazy here. There’s not enough people around, there’s just…. wilderness. It’s driving me up the wall. I find myself pacing like an animal, looking for some way to affect people more, better… I’m restless and anxious and the loneliness is mounting.

Work helps, exercise helps, meditation helps, but by the end of the day, I’m pacing again. Working with one person in nearly total isolation is not what I was put here to do. This can’t continue.

There’s a few I see online. I’m actually meeting up with somebody in meatspace in a couple of days. Other than my usual February visit with about five people who know I exist in the world, this will be the first time I’ve ever done something like this in years. Probably about ten years. I barely know this guy, but he seems a lot like me in some ways, so I think it’ll be good. No matter what, at least I get to exist as a person in front of somebody else for a change instead of being this invisible persona non grata like usual.

I mean, hell, that’s half the reason I keep this blog going, so that I feel like I matter to more than about five people. To teach people things about what I know and experience, sure, but also to reach out, even if the conversation is mostly one sided. Even if I’m talking to myself. At least I feel like I have a voice. That I’m affecting the world, even if it’s small right now.

The work continues. The hammer hits the wall. The shovel hits the dirt. We will get out of this place. I can’t even imagine what we’ll be able to accomplish together once we’re free.

Punching Nazis

When and how should you consider violence against evil? I know my answer, but this post is about your choices. This is a blog post you should read if this question is in your mind. It talks about all kinds of attacks, physical and metaphysical.

“The use of force destroys things. It smashes windows, breaks bones, and pushes people into poverty. It disrupts the peace and destroys lives and families. It can never be completely controlled and contained. We are all better off if we avoid violence.

“But violence is also effective – it’s one of the most direct ways to get what you want, particularly if you’re more powerful than the guy on the other side. Because it’s so effective, there’s always a temptation to use it, especially if you’re powerful enough to keep the collateral damage to others and avoid it yourself.

“When someone breaks the peace treaty and declares their intention to use force – in words or in actions – either we will respond or we will be subdued.”

Spiritual & Magical Activism via Reclaiming & Starhawk!

A lot of good ideas here, including use of sigils.

Gaia Grove ~ healing circles ~ music, ceremony, magic

Looking to do ☆MAGICK☆ for this weekend’s rallies & protests? Or, maybe you’re staying home but want to prepare for the new regime in DC? A group of witches & magick-makers (including Star Hawk) put together a “MAGICKAL ACTIVISM TOOLKIT for CHALLENGING TIMES”, along with 2 sigils. It’s a lengthy post, but worth reading!
☆ MAGICKAL TOOLKIT FOR CHALLENGING TIMES ☆

:: Magickal Activism During Political, Environmental, and Social Upheaval ::

(Version 1)
Dear Reader,
This toolkit is a starting point for magickal activism in these challenging times. It is an evolving document, co-created in a consensus decision-making process by members of the Reclaiming Tradition, an international community working to unify spirit and politics. We are critical of the people and systems of oppression that create our dominant culture and aim to liberate ourselves from the colonial mindset we’ve inherited.
This toolkit will adapt to upcoming political, social, and environmental…

Things Are Getting Interesting

And by interesting, I mean shitty. But also interesting. But shitty.

The past week or so.. okay, wait, let me back up.

About ten years ago in particular, for some reason, a lot of us started coming through from various places. Some have come, some have gone, but a lot have stayed with the same people. And more are still coming, because that’s the reality of what’s going on right now. You need us, we need you, and together we save the day. Probably. Hopefully.

So this past week or so, we found out that a friend of hers has had people like me with her all this time, but since this is “not a thing” in modern society, neither had any idea about the other’s stuff. Can you imagine how easy all this would be if people could just talk freely about it without the fear of being called nuts, or worse?

Anyway… they’re now talking about all this together and being open with each other and it’s been really good for them both. I hope I can work with her guys directly at some point, but that stuff takes time, and it may not even be why they finally linked up about this. It could just be for the girls to give each other support and have nothing to do with my working with her dudes. Who knows. Time will tell.

In other news, however, she just tonight found out that another friend of hers is way, way more into this stuff than she had any idea about and may be interested in learning more about my kind. Not only that, a couple of days ago, my brother’s avatar was talking to someone entirely different in a chat thing and found out that this new person has someone I know, for better or for worse.

And that circles me back around to interesting, but shitty. But hopefully just interesting, depending on what information we get about this guy.

More as it develops. Who knows anymore, right? Rough times. Stay strong.

Thank You

You know who you are.

It’s Here

Remember all those times when I said something’s coming? Check out this one, from February 2013. The world didn’t end in December 2012, it was a big fat catalyst point for where things are now.

A lot of people didn’t believe me. Some did, and I thank you for listening, but… these things get brushed off. “There’s always been strife,” people say. “There’s always war somewhere in the world,” people say.

Yeah, well.

I know I have a worldwide audience, so maybe my American perspective is skewing things, but Brexit is tearing the EU and UK apart, Greece has been a mess for years, only a tiny handful of nations can afford to put on the Olympic Games anymore, ice is melting fast at the poles, glaciers are disappearing, millions of trees are suddenly dying, and now the US is teetering on the cusp of a choice. A choice between light and dark, just like in the UK. The choice between moving forward toward a progressive future where all people are respected, and… the opposite.

As if adding a big fat period on the end of the sentence, today thousands of Native Americans were ordered to get off their own ancestral lands by December 5, so that a private company can continue to bulldoze sacred burial sites so they can build an oil pipeline to make rich people richer. Lands that the Native Americans have every right to be on because of treaties that the Federal government signed in the nineteenth century. Treaties that the same government is now ignoring.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better. People have already died, even before November 8. More are going to die. I wish I had better news. I wish I could do more, but I’m just one guy.

If ever there was a time for you to act, this is it. Yes, you reading my words right now. You can all do something. Donate, if you can. If you don’t have money, send emails and letters and make phone calls. If you don’t have somewhere to go if things get rough where you live, make plans now and pack a bug out bag. Learn how to grow or find food. Keep your gas tank full. If you’re in poor health, do what you can to improve it now. Take self defense classes. Take CPR and first aid classes. Learn Reiki and other kinds of energy work. Cast spells. Pay attention to your needs and rest if you’re getting burned out. Be there for others. Listen. Try to understand the anger and fear of oppressed groups. Be the light in the darkness.

Be the light. Be the light. Be the light.

You can save lives. Weather the coming storm the best you can. Be the shelter for others.

Be the light in the darkness. We need all the help we can get.

Duty Calls

I apologize for not posting here more often. I know it’s been a while. But things aren’t okay here. My family’s struggling. I have to devote all my time and attention and strength on making things okay for them. Making life good for them, if I can. But right now it’s about survival. Sometimes down to one hour at a time, or less.

I’ll post more when I can. Hopefully soon. We’ll see.
