Trees and Water

I’ve tried to describe, in other posts here, how one being can be in a million places at the same time, and how there can be a million faces of somebody but still be that same being at the core. I’ve used a tree metaphor, where each face is a leaf on a branch, which is connected to the individual tree.

This post by John Beckett is also a really good metaphor for that concept.

I struggle with the concept of the multiplicity of the Gods. That They are many and not one is simple enough. But how do we wrap our minds around the idea that while Athena is an individual being, Athena Parthenos is not the same as Athena Polias, and neither is the same as Our Lady of Nashville?

Open a bottle of water (a reusable bottle you filled yourself, of course) and pour it into two glasses. Each glass is identical. Now, put one in the refrigerator and leave one sitting out. Immediately they begin to differentiate, first by temperature and later by the microscopic substances that fall into them. Take one of them outside and it begins to change even more. While the essence of water remains H2O, tap water is different from pond water is different from ocean water.

For me this is the most helpful aspect of this metaphor. When a God is worshipped or otherwise experienced in a place or by a particular group of people, that interaction affects the God just as it affects the people. Those who encounter that God in that place or through that tradition will have a different experience – perhaps slightly different, perhaps very different – from those who do so otherwise.

Water can be liquid, or solid (ice), or gas (steam). Its properties and especially the ways in which we interact with it differ based on its state, but it is still water… and it is still the particular differentiation of water it was when it was liquid.

Likewise, we can interact with a God in an ecstatic encounter, or in a natural phenomenon, or in a human-made object. All of them are the God in question.

The Great Turning, and the Great Unravelling

It was hard to find a quote to pull out for this article, but I think I found a good one:

Whatever it is that you’re drawn to do in the Great Turning, don’t even think of doing it alone. The hyper-individualism of our competitive industrialised culture has isolated people from each other, breeding conformity, obedience and an epidemic of loneliness. The good news of the Great Turning is that it is a team undertaking. It evolves out of countless spontaneous and synergistic interactions as people discover their common goal and their different gifts.

No one knows how this is all going to end. Do the best you can to prepare, and make the world better with every minute you have here.

Choose Your Strategy

Once again, this John Beckett guy over on Patheos knows what’s up:

The spiritual world and the mundane world are ever and always intertwined. My experiences over the past few years tell me that the spiritual is becoming more and more present in the mundane. Not enough to make materialists change their assumptions about the way the world works, but enough to make those of us with a magical perspective sit up and pay attention.

Are you going to try to get through this on your own? I don’t recommend it, but some of you will try. You will only have your own resources to draw on, and you will have little in the way of emergency assistance if (when) things go badly. I suggest you firm up your relationships with your Gods, ancestors, and other spiritual allies – you will need them.

Yeah, I’m still here.

Things have been busy here. Much more internal. More personal. So I don’t want to discuss a lot of those things in a public blog.

I’ve been so busy that I’ve fallen behind on reading and, she reminds me, teaching. I guess that was the purpose of this blog, to help people understand some things. Which is what teaching is.

I would say that’s weird for me, but if you go back far enough I guess it’s not. I guess it’s never been. I guess you don’t have to go that far back in my life to find places where I taught people, or tried to. I guess it’s always been part of who I am. I haven’t always been great at it, but I’ve never stopped trying to help people understand things.

So what next? Dunno. I should get back to this. I apologize for being away from posting for so long. It just hasn’t felt that important since so few people comment. I get a lot of people reading this, from all over the world, but what do you think? What do you feel? Did you learn anything here?

We have more ink. More scars. More tears and frustration. More joy and wonder. That’s life though, isn’t it. That’s what I signed up for, coming here. And the small tasks and the big ones. The tiny observations and the big miracles.

The work continues. The road goes ever on.

Chaos Magic

There does seem to be a name for what she does after all, and it seems to be Chaos Magic. No, we’re not doing the K. You’ll probably also roll your eyes at how the article seems to have been written by a 15-year-old boy who enjoys masturbation and pizza a bit too much. But yeah, this is basically what we do, mostly.

External Individuals, What a Concept

First… was my last post really back in May? Sorry about that. I don’t know why there was such a long gap. Time weirdness maybe.

Anyway, somebody on Patheos hits it out of the park again.

One of the things that tends to annoy me in regards to a large portion of modern books written on witchcraft is the tendency to use the gods and spirits as if they were merely correspondences. A book will give maybe a short intro into who this god or spirit is and possibly a list of correspondences that they associate with them and then jump into having you call upon them in a ritual or a spell. It’s no wonder that I hear from many witches and pagans that they aren’t sure if the gods and spirits are real. Most likely because they aren’t really showing up in their rituals when they call upon them.

I just want to quote this entire article by Mat Auryn. But I won’t because you should go read the thing over there. But here’s a bit more:

…working with the gods as external individuals will definitely change your relationship with them. The gods and spirits are not your servants, and you shouldn’t treat them as such. You show them respect. You show gratitude for their help and gifts. You don’t talk badly about them or mock them.

See, now why is that such a hard… oh, right. Ego. Well, that and ignorance. Some people really just want a plug-and-play technique for making stuff happen. Light this color candle and burn that incense and say these words and hooray, you’re Harry Potter. Other people actually think that we don’t exist without their consciousness, and that gods and spirits are these shell-like puppets, just waiting around for their amazingness to animate us for their use. That’s what’s known as being an arrogant dick.

Man, I wish you could see the look on my face right now. Maybe, if you’re respectful, and know how to get me there, you will.

So You Want To Use Sigils

Stumbled on this today. If you want a solid method for using sigils to make shit happen, read this. I don’t recommend the drug part at the end, but whatever works for you, not my place to get all judgey.

How To Get Big Magic From Little Squiggles

He gets it, especially the important bit about how this stuff affects other stuff on the quantum level. Nudging probability is how most of this “magic” business works. It’s effective, whatever you believe.

The Brotherhood of Angels and Men, The Second Message

Okay, sorry for the big gap in going over The Brotherhood of Angels and Men, but I’m back on it. We’re up to The Second Message.

The Angels ask from you, not worship–for that would be inappropriate–but love…

Yes. Thank you Geoffrey Hodson. Worship creeps me out. Some of his stuff does wander pretty close to worship, especially since there’s this hard separation in his view between “us” and “them.” Just something to be aware of. But who doesn’t like to be spoken nicely to? To be brought fresh flowers and honored and appreciated and thanked?

Then he gets really gender specific about God the Father, so ignore that part obviously, but then:

The power of our prayers will be enhanced by being offered up with yours… our sphere of usefulness to God will be enlarged by sharing yours…

Very interesting. This is an angel telling this to a human person. Think about why this might be. What this means.

It’s not just 1+1=2, although that certainly would help. It’s two things: Malkuth, and synergy.

noun: synergy; plural noun: synergies; noun: synergism

  1. the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

Angels need to connect fully with earthly, physical people in order to take that prayer back to the Source as powerfully as possible. People need angels for the same reason. Together, the partnership can do some incredible things.

It is often said, Kether (the “highest” Sephira) is in Malkuth and Malkuth is in Kether. As the receiving sphere of all the other Sephiroth, Malkuth gives tangible form to the other emanations. The Divine energy comes down and finds its expression in this plane, and our purpose as human beings is to bring that energy back around the circuit again and back up the Tree.

Aha. But let’s continue with Hodson:

The aim of the Brotherhood is to widen the range of human love by including the angels within its rosy glow, so that the concept of brotherhood, the keynote of the coming age, shall know no bounds, but widen to include all living things, mortal and immortal–the dwellers in the etheral worlds of air, fire, and water–the people of the limitless domains of Space.

The time approaches when they will no longer remain invisible to you.

I wish this time would damn well hurry up. Just think if everybody could see us, perceive what we’re about, hear us, and help make the world a better place before things reach a point of no return on this planet. Maybe we need to work harder at it.

Be of the same mind, one with another, for there is but one Life, boundless and inexhaustible, which is the very essence of you all.

Even though in the context of the book this was the message given to the angels, this is for both humans and angels to hear. Everybody is drinking from the same well. Partner up. Let’s ride.

We would light a fire in your hearts that you may feel the glow of the same great flame that burns within us, the flame of divine Life, that restores as it consumes, ever renewing its fiery power in the lives of those in whom it burns. That is the meaning of the angel life, this is the secret of the angel fire, the fire divine which burns continually; it is the flame which leaps from that immortal spark, our innermost Selves, which springs from the central fiery heart of the universe–the Spiritual Sun.

All your faculties will be increased, and all your powers enhanced, till life becomes an ecstasy, till unsuspected beauty reveals itself in everything, till undreamed-of capacity for love, for life, for happiness, arises within you.

The flame that burns within us. The secret of the angel fire. The spark divine at the heart of the universe. All your powers enhanced.

Well? Now what?

We were doing some research recently and have been working with some stuff like the Qabbalistic Cross and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram which seems to be popular with certain magic practitioner people. I’m actually really liking the Cross, it feels familiar and like a good starting place for some things we do. But with the Cross, something got me thinking. Malkuth. I looked it up, and here’s what one page had to say:

“Malkuth is the first sphere upon which an initiate enters the Tree of Life. It is in this realm that you learn of the existence of other things, other than the earth, and touch upon divine sources.”

So… what’s all this about “low vibrations” being “bad” among so many newagey people? Malkuth is literally the second point on the Cross, and is the bridge, or door, or connector, between the physical and everything not physical. You can’t complete the Cross without the Kingdom… which is earth.

Here’s a bit more to think about:

Malkuth means Kingdom. It is associated with the realm of matter/earth and relates to the physical world, the planets and the solar system. It is important not to think of this Sephirah as “unspiritual”. Even though Malkuth is the emanation “furthest” from the Divine Source, it is still on the Tree of Life and therefore has its own unique spiritual qualities. It is often said, Kether (the “highest” Sephira) is in Malkuth and Malkuth is in Kether.[2] As the receiving sphere of all the other Sephiroth, Malkuth gives tangible form to the other emanations. The Divine energy comes down and finds its expression in this plane, and our purpose as human beings is to bring that energy back around the circuit again and back up the Tree.

Do the people who think that things of earth are “low” and “dirty” and even “evil” to be gotten away from… do they not understand how important the connection of all this to the earth is? If you’re a physical person, you’re made of physical matter, and are existing on the physical plane, with solid plants and trees and rocks and things, like the old song goes. The tree has to be rooted in something, right? If it’s not rooted, it gets disconnected and lost… right? If you, a physical person, reject Malkuth, how do you bridge the gap and access the rest of the tree?

Notice what it says about the “angelic order” too. “Souls of fire.” That’s not fluffy stuff, trust me on that. It’s intense and can scare people and can be dangerous if you handle it wrong. But there it is. It’s part of the whole picture. If you’re rejecting the “low” or “dark” stuff, you’re throwing out a big chunk of how you, a physical person reading this, can work with these powers.

If you can’t handle Malkuth, you’re about to get a rude awakening when much darker and more intense and powerful stuff makes itself known and you don’t know how to deal with it.

Another song I like says “when you reach the top don’t forget where you came from.” For most people reading this, that’s Malkuth.

Quick PSA: I will be getting back to my review of the Brotherhood of Angels and Men soon. Kinda dropped the ball on that. Sorry. What reminded me of it is that she got handed a big stack of old metaphysical books by Stewart Edward White, I think from the 1940s? So I’ll be reviewing those in the future, and Call to the Heights by Hodson.

Thinking about Malkuth as I’ve been on our walks lately, I was also thinking about going through the Tree of Life too, but I’m not sure since so many others have already covered what the Sephiroth are and do. I kind of want to cover Daath at least, since so many people skip over the Void and don’t understand it. But I’ve lived it. I’ve been inside it. I’ve worked with it. So maybe I’ve just answered my own question.

Quantum Science, Your Brain, and Us

This one covers a lot of topics to do with quantum theory and human consciousness and how they interact, but more importantly, how we interact with you:

The Strange Link Between the Human Mind and Quantum Physics

Quantum mechanics is the best theory we have for describing the world at the nuts-and-bolts level of atoms and subatomic particles. Perhaps the most renowned of its mysteries is the fact that the outcome of a quantum experiment can change depending on whether or not we choose to measure some property of the particles involved.

When this “observer effect” was first noticed by the early pioneers of quantum theory, they were deeply troubled. It seemed to undermine the basic assumption behind all science: that there is an objective world out there, irrespective of us. If the way the world behaves depends on how – or if – we look at it, what can “reality” really mean?

That’s what Schrodinger’s Cat is about. It’s both alive and dead until a person observes its state. Of course, this is a macrocosm example, because the cat itself knows if it’s alive or dead. Cats don’t need people to tell them. But it’s the kind of example people need in order to understand what happens at the quantum microcosm level, which is a whole other situation.

Today some physicists suspect that, whether or not consciousness influences quantum mechanics, it might in fact arise because of it. They think that quantum theory might be needed to fully understand how the brain works.

Here’s where the article starts to get really interesting and isn’t the same old thing about dead/alive cats. It’s turning the theory back on itself, or on its head, or whatever. You get the idea.

The article then talks about the “slit experiment” with light photons and observations and measurements affecting the outcome. But then…

Wheeler even entertained the thought that the presence of living beings, which are capable of “noticing”, has transformed what was previously a multitude of possible quantum pasts into one concrete history. In this sense, Wheeler said, we become participants in the evolution of the Universe since its very beginning. In his words, we live in a “participatory universe.”

Now you’re reading more closely, right? Right. Now we’re getting into where people are affecting how the universe is created and plays out, and not just through conscious (or even unconscious) choices. Simply observing the world around you alters things at the quantum level.

Now imagine if you could control this. Some of us can, as I’ve talked about here before. But I digress. Back to the article:

What if, Penrose asked, there are molecular structures in our brains that are able to alter their state in response to a single quantum event. Could not these structures then adopt a superposition state, just like the particles in the double slit experiment? And might those quantum superpositions then show up in the ways neurons are triggered to communicate via electrical signals?

Maybe, says Penrose, our ability to sustain seemingly incompatible mental states is no quirk of perception, but a real quantum effect.

These structures are called microtubules. They’re real and they exist inside you right now. There’s even a photo of them in the article I’m quoting here. I posted a link to an article here a while back talking about these things, and how they could be what contains consciousness when it’s inside a meat suit. Hello, let me just borrow some of your microtubules for a few minutes so I can type. That kind of thing. But anyway…

Pay close attention to this next part:

Put another way, entangled states are really superposition states involving more than one quantum particle.

Okay. If you’ve read other articles about quantum entanglement, they talk about how two particles can affect each other even though they’re nowhere near each other. I’ve also talked about how parallel universes overlap, which is how I’m able to talk to you here. But this takes it a little farther into explaining how they can overlap, for you people out there who need hard science to explain all this. The superposition state at the quantum level.

But wait, there’s more. It also explains how some of you can not only hear us, but how you can interact with us, and let us front, beyond (or maybe in addition to) the microtubule theory.

The article talks about a particular kind of phosphorus atom and Polsner molecules, then:

In Posner molecules, Fisher argues, phosphorus spins could resist decoherence for a day or so, even in living cells. That means they could influence how the brain works.

Because of entanglement in Posner molecules, two such signals might thus in turn become entangled: a kind of quantum superposition of a “thought”, you might say.

…You might say.

There’s some other cool stuff in there that I’ll let you explore on your own. I’d love to hear what you think. Post a comment.
